Somalia: 6 AU soldiers killed in Al Shabaab ambush attack
MOGADISHU, Somalia – At least six African Union peacekeeping soldiers from Burundian contingent were killed in ambush attack carried out by al Shabaab.
The attack took place on Saturday in Balcad town, some 30km north of the capital, Mogadishu, when al Shabaab launched an attack on Somali and African Union troops.
A witness told local media that six soldiers were killed and an armored vehicle was destroyed during fighting between militants and coalition forces in the town.
There was no immediate comment from Somali military or African Union mission over the attack.
Al Shabaab, an al Qaeda-linked group, which wants topple the weak-western backed government of Somalia.
.The rebel group has been waging insurgency for more than ten years in Somalia.
The militant group also lost key towns in the south and central to Somali army forces and African Union troops.
The al Qaeda linked group has carried out similar attacks which killed dozens in the capital Mogadishu for the last couple weeks.
