Somalia: 3 dead in fighting against al Shabaab
MOGADISHU, Somalia – At least three people have been killed in fighting between armed local militias known as Macawisley and Al Shabaab militants in Hiran region of central Somalia.
The fighting erupted near Mahas town when Al Shabaab militants carried out an attack on the Macawisley militias based in Wabweyn area, killing three people, a local resident said.
He says the local militias had repulsed the attack that triggered fierce fighting lasted nearly an hour on Friday.
He added a civilian was also injured in the fighting.
Somali authorities in the region said its forces helped the local militias fighting against Al Shabaab.
There was no immediate comment from Al Shabaab over the skirmish.
The group was pushed out of Mogadishu capital in 2011 by Somali army troops and 22,000-strong African Union force in Somalia.
The rebel group also lost most of their strongholds, but it still controls large rural areas and remains the key threat to peace in Somalia.
The al Qaeda linked group has been fighting for over ten years to overthrow the internationally- backed government in Somalia.
