Somalia: 25 killed in ongoing attack claimed by Al Shabaab

MOGADISHU, Somalia – At least 25 people have been killed and 35 others injured some seriously in suicide attack claimed by Al Shabaab in Somali capital Mogadishu, police said.

The attack started after Somali Islamists detonated explosives and fired automatic weapons as they mounted a deadly attack on restaurant building next to hotel Maka Al Mukarama in Mogadishu.

Somali police officer Hussein Mohamed confirmed at least 25 people were killed in the ongoing attack.

Mohamed says scores of people remained trapped inside building as siege continued.

He says Somali security forces freed scores of civilians as they fought their way into the grounds.

But, gunmen were still in control of parts of the building.

Somali militant group al-Shabaab, which has longstanding ties to al-Qaeda, claimed credit for the attack.
