Somalia: 12 people dead in suicide explosions in Mogadishu
MOGADISHU, Somalia — At least 12 people have been killed and dozens injured in twine suicide bomb and gun attack on Somalia’s Interior Ministry headquarters in Mogadishu.
The security forces ended a two-hour seige of building, shooting 3 armed attackers dead inside, a policeman Hussein Mohamed said.
Mohamed says 9 other civilians, including at least 2 staff members at the Ministry had been killed in during the attack.
He says the Saturday’s attack began with a suicide car bomber detonated at the gates of the interior ministry compound.
The Ministry headquarters is also close to the presidential palace and parliament buildings in the Somali capital Mogadishu.
“We have killed at least 3 armed attackers, who holed up the ministry. The operation has been ended”, he said.
Mohamed says the victims of the attack were immediately rushed into hospitals in the Somali capital.
The Somalia-based al-Shabab, an arm of al-Qaida, has claimed the responsibility for the attack through its website.
The group says its operation has been successfully carried out.
