Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is set to travel to Addis Ababa on Thursday for an official visit with Ethiopian officials present.
He was invited to attend ceremonies marking the 90th anniversary of the Ethiopian Air Force in the capital city with regional leaders.
The Ethiopian Air Force fought Somali forces during the 1977-78 Ogaden war, a conflict that still shapes relations between the neighboring states.
Hassan Sheikh is also expected to hold talks with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on bilateral and regional issues during the Addis visit.
Discussions may include Ethiopia’s role mediating between Somalia and the United Arab Emirates after Mogadishu canceled security agreements with Abu Dhabi recently.
The visit comes ahead of the African Union summit in Addis Ababa amid tensions over Israel’s recognition of Somaliland regionally and diplomatically.
