MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Tuesday met with some of his main political rivals in Mogadishu, including the leaders of Puntland and Jubaland, both of which have cut ties with the federal government.
Said Abdullahi Deni, the leader of Puntland, moved in March 2024 to withdraw recognition of and confidence in federal government institutions, including the office of the president, after parliament approved amendments to the first four chapters of the constitution.
The meeting comes three months before President Mohamud’s four-year term is set to expire.
