Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has arrived in New York to attend the 80th United Nations General Assembly session.
President Mohamud will deliver his second UN speech since returning to office in 2022.
This year’s theme is: “Joining forces for the greater good: 80 years and beyond of peace, progress, and human rights,” UN officials said.
All 193 UN member states participate in the Assembly, where each country holds equal voting power on pressing global political and policy issues.
President Mohamud’s visit comes amid growing lobbying pressure in Washington to recognize Somaliland, despite long-standing U.S. policy supporting Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity.
The United States has repeatedly emphasized opposition to recognizing Somaliland as a nation, affirming full support for Somalia and existing borders.
However, new lobbying efforts—especially those backed by the United Arab Emirates—are intensifying pressure on Washington to reconsider its stance on Somaliland’s status.
