Somali President calls for unity talks with Somaliland

The President of Federal Republic of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has reiterated his call for unity talks between Somalia and the break-away region of Somaliland.

The country’s top leader, Farmaajo says government is committed to relaunch talks with Somaliland during Somalia’s 58th Independence Anniversary speech on Monday in Mogadishu.

I expressed hope that we  can solve our differences and be united”, a statement issed by Somali President’s office reads.

Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia on May 18, 1991, as its population of about 4 million, can boast of an army, its own currency and legal system and is appreciated for holding credible elections.

The President of Federal Republic of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has reiterated his call for unity talks between Somalia and the break-away region of Somaliland.

The two sides held two rounds of talks brokered by Turkey in Istanbul and Ankara in 2013 and 2015 that ended without a tangible breakthrough for their differences and row over the management of Somalia’s airspace.

Despite its nearly three-decade struggle to secure secession, Somaliland remains unrecognized as Mogadishu insists on the unity of Somalia as paramount.
