Somalia’s opposition coalition known as the Salvation Forum has warned against holding elections without a nationally agreed framework, rejecting any term extensions for current regime led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
In a statement issued Saturday, the group urged regional states — including Galmudug, Hirshabelle, and South West State — to proceed with elections independently rather than participate in what it described as an imposed or unilateral process.
The forum said electoral laws, political party regulations, and any election lacking broad consensus would be considered illegitimate. It emphasized that all political stakeholders must be involved in shaping the electoral process.
Opposition leaders called for a return to Somalia’s 2012 Provisional Constitution, describing it as a foundational agreement necessary to guide the country’s democratic transition.
The group also raised alarm over what it called the unlawful seizure of public land and warned security forces against becoming entangled in political affairs or being used to prolong the current administration’s term in office.
The forum concluded by calling for an inclusive national conference involving all major stakeholders, including the Puntland and Jubbaland regional administrations, to resolve political tensions and chart a united path forward.
