MOGADISHU, Somalia – At least seven Al Shabaab militants were confirmed dead on Friday during a military operation carried out by Somali army forces near the capital, Mogadishu.
A Somali military official Hussein Adan Hashi says the operation conducted between Gandarshe and Dhanane area near the capital, killing 7 militants.
Hashi says the army forces also seized AK-47s, machine-guns and RPGs during the operation.
He added the operation was part of ongoing efforts which the country’s army forces aimed at pushing militants out of Lowere Shabelle region in southern Somalia.
The operation comes a week after Al Shabaab carried out a massive attack on a military base near Marka town where the group says killed 23 soldiers and seized weapons.
The group was pushed out of Mogadishu capital in 2011 by Somali army troops and 22,000-strong African Union force in Somalia.
The rebel group also lost most of their strongholds, but it still controls large rural areas and remains the key threat to peace in Somalia.
