MOGADISHU – Somali military says at least 30 Al Shabaab fighters were killed on Friday in a joint operation carried out west of the capital, Mogadishu.
The operation was conducted by US-backed Special Forces known as ‘Danab’ in Balow-Eyle area near Barire town, some 60km west of the capital, said a Lieutenant Osmail Abdimalik Malim.
Malim says 30 militants were killed in the operation.
He added that the military forces also destroyed a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED).
“We killed 30 militants and destroyed VBIED that the militant group was planning to attack in Mogadishu”, he said.
Somali army radio reported that US drone strike targeted militants on Friday near the town after partners came under ambush attack by al Shabaab.
There was no immediate comment from the militant group over the claims yet.
The group carried out similar attacks in an attempt to overthrow the weak-western backed government based in Mogadishu.
Last week, at least 90 people were killed after a bomb-laden truck exploded at a busy checkpoint in the Somali capital Mogadishu.
Somali armed group al Shabab claimed the responsibility for the attack, saying its main targeting was Turkish convoy with escorting Somali soldiers.
