MOGADISHU – Somali military forces carried out an operation against al Qaeda linked al Shabaab in southern Middle Juba region, triggering brief fighting.
The clash started when the army forces on patrol came under ambush attack by al Shabaab militants in Abdalla Birole area, some 50km from Kismayo town, military officer Mohamed Ahmed said.
He says the military forces killed 20 militants during the skirmish.
Mohamed declined to comment on the casualty of their side.
“We are committed to continuing such operation to eradicate a terrorist group”, he said.
There was no immediate comment from Al Shabaab over the claims.
The group carried out similar attacks for the capital, Mogadishu and other regions for the last months.
Al Shabaab, an al Qaeda linked group, which wants to topple the weak-western backed government of Somali.
The Islamic militant group has been waging insurgency for more than ten years in Somalia.
