Somali military officer shot dead in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Unknown gunmen, thought to be al Shabaab have shot and killed a military officer in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

The deceased, whose name has been released as Lieutenant, Mohamed Abdulle was gunned down by men armed with pistols in Daynile district of Mogadishu, a witness said.

He says the killers escaped from the crime scene uncaught.

No group says it carried out his assassination, but such killings are often carried out by al Shabaab, an al Qaeda linked group.

Somali police soldiers arrived at the area and launched an investigation over the murder.

The Somali military remains unavailable to reach on the phone for comments on Abdulle’s assassination.

Mogadishu has seen deadly terror attacks and assassinations, with most of them were claimed by the rebel group.

The group was ousted out of the capital, Mogadishu by Somali army along with African Union force in 2011 after joint military operation.

The militant group also lost key towns in south and central regions due to operations, but it still holds large swaths in rural areas of Somalia.
