Somali journalist regains his freedom after brief detention

MOGADISHU –Somali journalist has regained his freedom on Thursday after he was arrested by security forces in Baladweyne town, some 335km north of the capital of Mogadishu.

Abdishakur Mohamed Hassan working for SAAB TV and STAR FM was detained when his arrest was ordered by governor of Hiran region, Mr. Yusuf Ahmed Hagar (Dabageed).

Hassan was put into behind bars after he filed at STAR FM a news report of transport drivers and conductors staged protest against extortionate payment of double payments as “taxation” in Beledweyne.

Somali Union journalists has strongly protested against renewed acts of intimidation against journalists in central Somalia, following arrest of broadcast journalist in Beledweyne town of Hiran region.

The Union journalists considers this latest arrest as part of harassment campaign against journalists in Hiran region since another journalist, Abdinur Osman Adan, a reporter for SBC TV and Wadani Radio, was briefly arrested on 20 February 2019 by the same regional administration.
