MOGADISHU – Somali Islamist group Al Shabaab has taken control of key town near Kenyan border along Somalia.

The al Qaeda linked group’s fighters occupied Fafahdhun town immediately after Kenya troops vacated their base earlier on Saturday.

It is unclear why Kenya forces decided to leave their base near the border town.

Busaar and Geriley are now the only two Kenya military bases in Somalia’s Gedo region.

Somali armed group Al Shabaab says it has re-captured the town, and started lecturing to the local residents.

The group has been fighting more than ten years in Somalia.

However, Al Shabaab, which wants to topple the weak-western backed government of Somalia has carried out deadly attacks in the capital of Mogadishu.
