Somali Islamists detain school children for spying

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The al Qaeda inspired group Al Shabaab has detained school children and teachers for spying United States after operation in Bu’ale town, some 635km to northwest of Somali capital, Mogadishu.

Radio Kulmiye quoting witnesses, said group’s fighters had earlier on Monday raided and stormed into school in the town, arresting school students and their teachers in suspicion of spying for United State agencies.

Kulmiye aired and published 10 people, including school students, teachers and elders had been sent into Al Shabaab behind bars in the town for interrogations.

The detainees were accused of involving in US drone strikes killed dozens around the town last year, according to Kulmiye, a local radio based in Mogadishu.

The group’s officials declined to comment on the operation.

The Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab lost key towns in south and central Somalia to African Union forces and Somali army troops, following joint military operations for the last 3 years.

But Al Shabaab still holding large swaths in south regions and capable of large scale attacks.

The group has been fighting to topple the weak-western-backed government based in Mogadishu for more than ten years in Somalia.
