MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), working with international partners, carried out planned operations in the Lower Shabelle region targeting sites and fighters linked to the al-Shabab militant group.
Nine militants were killed in the operations, and six large generators used to manufacture improvised explosive devices were destroyed, according to a statement from NISA.
The first operation took place in the Kuunyo Barrow area, where forces targeted a site housing generators allegedly used to produce explosives.
Six militants were killed, including a senior figure identified as Abiikar Nur, who was said to be responsible for the equipment and vehicles, and Abdifitah Mohamed Hassan, described as a key mechanic involved in assembling car bombs.
In a separate operation in the Tugaareey area of Lower Shabelle, forces targeted militants hiding in a forested area. Three fighters were killed and others were dispersed, weakening the group’s presence in the area, the statement said.
The operations are part of ongoing efforts by Somali authorities, backed by international partners, to dismantle al-Shabab’s infrastructure and prevent further attacks.
