Somali forces clash with Al Shabaab, 2 killed
MOGADISHU, Somalia – Heavy fighting broke out between Somali military forces and Al Shabaab militants in Garbaharey town, the provincial capital of Gedo region in the west of Somalia.
The skirmish flared up when Al Shabaab militants launched an assault on army base manned by government forces in the town, causing fierce fighting.
Somali military official said its forces repulsed the militants’ attack, killing two Al Shabaab fighters during the fighting.
He also said the military troops seized 3 RPGs from the militants.
The militant group has not commented on the fighting yet.
The group was pushed out of Mogadishu capital in 2011 by Somali army troops and 22,000-strong African Union force in Somalia.
The rebel group also lost most of their strongholds, but it still controls large rural areas and remains the key threat to peace in Somalia.
The al Qaeda linked group has been fighting for over ten years to overthrow the internationally-backed government in Somalia.
