MOGADISHU, Somalia — A delegation from Somalia’s federal government has arrived in Pakistan for talks aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between the two countries, Somali officials said.
The delegation arrived in the capital, Islamabad, on Tuesday and was received by Pakistani government officials and Somalia’s ambassador to Pakistan, Sheikh Noor Mohamed Hassan.
The delegation is led by Somalia’s Interior Minister, Ali Yusuf, and includes senior officials from key institutions, among them the chairman of the National Independent Electoral Commission, Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan; the director of the National Identification and Registration Authority, Abdiwali Timacadde; the head of the Somali Disaster Management Agency, Mahmoud Moallin; and the deputy commander of the Somali Police Force, Brig. Gen. Osman Abdullahi Kaniif.
Officials said the visit is intended to deepen diplomatic ties and enhance cooperation, particularly in areas related to national identification and civil registration, electoral processes, democratic governance and humanitarian assistance.
The trip comes as Somalia intensifies its diplomatic outreach in the region and beyond. In recent days, the government has dispatched multiple high-level delegations abroad as part of efforts to broaden its international partnerships.
On Monday, a separate Somali delegation led by Internal Security Minister Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag traveled to Doha, Qatar, where it joined other officials, including Defense Minister Ahmed Moallin Fiqi, for talks focused on strengthening bilateral relations and exploring new agreements.
Somalia has recently sought closer ties with Qatar following a cabinet decision to cancel previous agreements with the United Arab Emirates, a move that has reshaped its regional diplomatic engagement.
