Somali congress of trade unions calling for a fair, transparent and peaceful elections.
Following the parliamentary elections that began in the major towns of the country early last week the Somali congress of trade unions (SOCOTU) joins other civil society groups in calling for a fair, transparent and peaceful
SOCOTU commends the states of Puntland, Galmudug , Jubaland, South West and Hirshabelle regions for ensuring the safety of all the stakeholders to this election .These states have shown competence and ability with regard to the security of the candidates, the electoral commissioners and the delegates.
SOCOTU also commends the electoral commission both federal and state level for the manner in which they are conducting the elections of both houses of parliament. However, the SOCOTU urges the commissioners to be impartial and proceed with moderation.
SOCOTU appreciates the role of the international community in making the elections possible by providing both financial and diplomatic support. SOCOTU recognizes the effort made by the special representative of the
UN secretary general for Somalia Amb Michael Keating who tirelessly engaged the Somali leaders in ensuring that this election process commences.
Finally, SOCOTU calls for immediate cessation of the hostilities in Galkaio and calls for an end to the conflict by the states of Puntland and Galmudug. On behalf of the Somali workers SOCOTU prays for a peaceful election and subsequent transition of governments.
