Somali Athletics Federation complains about interference by NOCSOM official

Mareeg.com-Somali Athletics Federation sent a complaint letter to the National Olympic committee of Somalia over alleged interference by NOCSOM Secretary General Duran Ahmed Farah who has been accused of violating the Federation’s autonomy.

Somali Athletics Federation senior vice president and member of the NOCSOM executive committee Mrs. Khadija Aden Dahir said in a press statement here in Mogadishu on Monday that the accusation was written in a complaint letter sent to the country’s Olympic committee.

The complaint comes nearly six months after such alarming accusation came from Somali Football Federation Secretary General Abdi Qani Said Arab who said that the NOC secretary General was a great obstacle to local sport and in particularly the football telling the NOCSOM official to stop interfering what was not his job.

“Using his powers as Somali NOC top official, the Secretary General Duran Ahmed Farah has several times in the past violated against federation’s administrative independence for its activities—we talked to him separately and asked him to stop such bad behaviour, but unfortunately he didn’t listen to us” Somali Athletics Federation senior vice president Mrs. Khadija Aden Dahir said in her statement.

“The worst move he did is that since March this year the NOCSOM Secretary General Duran Ahmed Farah has been hugely working to dismantle the federation by trying to instigate disagreements between the federation and its member clubs—now the federation and its clubs are committed to go ahead to realise their dreams of developing athletics in the country and we are waiting to hear from the national Olympic committee about the complaint letter we sent to them” Mrs. Khadija Aden Dahir said in her statement.

Earlier this month Somali Athletes commission chairman and member of Somali NOC executive committee Hassan Ahmed Barre suggested such accusations against Mr. Duran saying the NOCSOM official was doing what he termed as ‘anti sporting behaviour’

“I was one of the stakeholders who contributed their voices to him, but it was really unfortunate that the NOCSOM secretary is diving into such mismanagement” Said Mr. Hassan Ahmed Barre who was earlier in the year elected by Generations for peace pioneers in the country as their chairman.

Mr. Barre also accused Duran Ahmed Farah of making divisions amongst Generations for peace pioneers in the country when he sent complaint letters to both the Generations for peace and Somali Olympic committee. Most GFP pioneers in the country also sent the same complaint to the GPF.

However, Somali NOC Secretary General Duran Ahmed Farah is currently outside the country and is expected to react to the accusations against him when he returns home next week.
