Somalia has announced the purchase of two Airbus A320 aircraft, reviving Somali Airlines for the first time in 34 years.
The deal was signed on Monday at the Office of the Prime Minister, underscoring the government’s push to rebuild national institutions after decades.
Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Mohamed Farah Nuh hailed the purchase, saying it supports Somalia’s aviation revival and broader economic recovery.
Somali Airlines last operated in 1991, before the collapse of the central government and ensuing decades of war and instability.
Minister Nuh said the new fleet would improve connectivity, create opportunities for citizens, and ensure Somalia’s compliance with global aviation safety standards.
He said the initiative is part of efforts to restore national pride, generate jobs, and reconnect Somalia to regional and global markets.
