Heavily armed soldiers have left Mogadishu for Las Anod ahead of Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre’s visit to SSC-Khatumo state.
The troops, part of his special protection, will ensure security prior to his arrival.
The visit, expected in the coming days, aims to assess the relationship between the central government and SSC-Khaatumo.
He will meet SSC-Khatumo President Abdikadir Ahmed Aw-Ali to discuss development projects and regional needs.
The visit is seen as a move toward recognizing SSC-Khatumo as a full-fledged state.
Meanwhile, Somaliland authorities, a breakaway region, have expressed anger over Barre’s decision to visit Las Anod.
Authorities have warned him against visiting the city, which has seen battles between Somaliland and SSC-Khatumo forces in 2023.
They also threatened to take any measures necessary to prevent his visit.
Tensions have mounted since Somaliland lost control of Sool and Sanaag regions to SSC-Khatumo troops in north of Somalia.
However, Las Anod is now preparing to welcome Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre’s delegation.
