MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s disaster agency (SoDMA) donated $700,000 to Awdal’s drought relief committee to assist families facing severe food and water shortages.
SoDMA Chairman Mohamud Moalim said the contribution during a press briefing in Mogadishu, stressing urgent action to address worsening humanitarian conditions across Awdal region.
“The needs in Awdal remain overwhelming. This is far from enough,” Moalim told reporters, urging expanded emergency relief efforts.
He added the funds will be directed toward life-saving supplies, emphasizing the importance of immediate distribution to vulnerable drought-stricken communities in Awdal.
Several cabinet ministers and lawmakers attended the handover, praising the government’s leadership and reiterating their commitment to supporting Somalia’s most drought-affected communities nationwide.
“We appreciate the government’s solidarity and this assistance,” said Public Works Minister Ilmi Mahamud Nur, highlighting the urgent needs facing Awdal residents today.
The officials extended gratitude to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, and Somalia’s cabinet for prioritizing humanitarian support during this crisis.
Attendees also acknowledged the Benadir Regional Administration’s contribution, commending Mayor Hassan Mohamed Hussein Mungab for standing with Awdal communities during Somalia’s most challenging drought period.
The donation follows a recent cabinet pledge of $500,000 and another $200,000 contribution from the Benadir Regional Administration earlier this month.
SoDMA continues mobilizing resources through meetings with business leaders, religious scholars, and aid partners, aiming to strengthen drought response and long-term resilience initiatives nationwide.
