MOGADISHU — Somali National Army repelled a pre-dawn attack by Al-Shabaab militants on Eldher town, killing 50 fighters.
Al-Shabaab claimed it killed 61 Somali soldiers and wounded 72 during the multi-front assault on Eldher in Galgaduud region.
Defense Minister Ahmed Moalim confirmed six soldiers were killed and 14 wounded defending the town against the militants’ attack.
U.S. drone strikes targeted militants during the fighting, helping Somali forces weaken Al-Shabaab’s offensive, Moalim said.
Both sides released videos claiming control of Eldher. Somali forces continue operations to pursue militants in the area.
