Reuters-Several people were killed and numerous others injured in New York City on Tuesday afternoon after a vehicle drove down a bike path that runs alongside the Hudson River in Manhattan, police said. Jonah Green reports.
The NYPD on Tuesday reporting eight people have been killed and 11 are injured after a truck plowed into a bike path in lower Manhattan. Police officials said one person has been taken into custody.
Two government sources told Reuters that the incident is being treated as a terrorist attack.
There were also reports of gunfire but its unclear where it came from.
In a tweet, the police department added: “The vehicle continued south striking another vehicle. The suspect exited the vehicle displaying imitation firearms & was shot by NYPD.”
An eyewitness told local news that he saw a white pick-up truck drive south down the busy bike path alongside the West Side Highway at full speed and hit several people.
The incident took place near the West Side Highway and Chambers Street, blocks away from the World Trade Center.
