President of Somalia Convenes Hiiraan-Middle Shabelle State Formation Conference in Jowhar
On September 15th 2016, the second phase of the inter-regional state formation meeting was convened by HE the President of Somalia in Jowhar, the regional capital of Middle Shabelle region, in keeping with the desire of the Federal Government of Somalia to form a federal state for Middle Shabelle & Hiiraan region before the country’s presidential election process begins on October 30th.
Members of both the Executive Council and the Federal Parliament as well as the traditional leaders of Hiraan & Middle Shabelle attended the conference. HE the State Minister of Finance and members of traditional leaders spoke on their optimism for the formation of a state administration to serve both regions.
HE the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, spoke of the importance of this conference for the formation of a unified federal state of both Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle regions and he appealed for compromise and solidarity amongst the participants. He also urged all parties, including local elders, to put aside any differences and come together in Jowhar town for the good of the community.
Prior to the conference, security was substantially enhanced by the presence of additional Somali National Army (SNA) and African Union troops.
