An airport spokesperson said the incident on the Airbus A320 plane, which was bound for Vienna, happened shortly after 8pm.

He added that all passengers were safely evacuated and crews were working to clear the runway.

There have been no reports of injuries.

A statement posted on the London airport’s Twitter account confirmed the flight had abandoned take-off following a “suspected engine problem”.

Thomas Steer, 24, was on the aborted flight and described hearing a “big bang” as the plane “skidded to a stop”.

Delayed passengers posted images to social media showing blue flashing lights on the runway and people evacuating using emergency slides.
