NUSOJ Condemns the Assassination of Somali Media Worker in Mogadishu

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) is saddened to learn the murder of a Somali media worker in Mogadishu’s Bakaro market on late Monday, the latest in a string of violence against journalists and media workers in Somalia.

Unidentified gunmen shot several times to death Mohamed Omar Mohamed known as “Camaar” at Mogadishu’s Bakaaro market around 5:45pm. The gunmen fled the scene after shooting at Mohamed to death several times on the head and chest, radio dalsan reported.

According to the Radio Dalsan management, Mohamed Omar Camaar has worked for the radio for the last two weeks at the radio marketing department and has gone for Bakaaro on Monday afternoon on duty.

The reason behind the killing is not yet known and no group has claimed the responsibility of the assassination of late Mohamed Hassan.

The National Union of Somali Journalists condemns the brutal and heinous murder of their colleague, Mohamed Omar and called for the Somali government carry out prompt investigation into the case and bring the criminals to justice.

“We are saddened to hear the murder of our colleague and condemn the killing in the strongest terms possible,” Mohamed Ibrahim, Secretary General of the National Union of Somali Journalists said, “The killers must not escape unpunished and media safety should be prioritized.”

“Our sincere condolences and sympathies goes to the families, friends and colleague and May Allah reward him Jannah.” Mr. Ibrahim added.
