106 Somali lawmakers have rejected Speaker Sheikh Aden Madobe’s decision to expel MP Abdillahi Hashi Abib
They called the move unconstitutional and unlawful.
“This violates Somalia’s Constitution and parliamentary rules”, they said.
In a letter dated March 15, 2025, Speaker Madobe declared Abib’s parliamentary seat vacant.
The decision has sparked outrage among lawmakers, who insist the Speaker lacks the power to expel an elected MP.
“Madobe cannot remove an MP without due process,” said one lawmaker who signed the letter of opposition.
The controversy has intensified political tensions within Somalia’s federal parliament.
Many lawmakers are now demanding a legal review of the Speaker’s decision.
Abib has yet to publicly respond to the move.
Observers warn the dispute could deepen divisions and threaten parliamentary stability.
