MOGADISHU, Somalia — At least six mortar rounds have rained down on the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
The rocket attack came shortly after a plane carrying Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed landed in Mogadishu.
Some rounds are reported to have hit Halane Camp, which houses UN, AU, US, and foreign embassies.
The warning system at Aden Adde Airport was activated due to the mortar attack.
The shelling disrupted Thursday’s flight schedules, with several planes reportedly ordered to make U-turns for safety.
Local residents said some rockets hit nearby villages, causing reported casualties.
No group has claimed responsibility for the bombardment, but such attacks are often linked to Al Shabab group.
Driven out of Mogadishu in 2011, Al-Shabaab continues to carry out deadly attacks.
For over a decade, the group has been battling to impose a hardline interpretation of Sharia law in Somalia.
Al-Shabaab still controls large swaths of southern and central Somalia.
