Mortar Attack Hits Mogadishu

Read Time:1 Minute, 2 Second

At least three mortar rounds struck Mogadishu amid warnings of possible terror attacks in Somalia.

The shells reportedly landed inside Halane camp, which houses the UN, AU, U.S. Embassy, and other foreign diplomatic missions.

Emergency sirens were activated, triggering heightened security alerts.

It remains unclear if the attack resulted in any casualties, as Somali officials have yet to comment on the shelling.

Al-Shabab, linked to al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility but provided no further details on the motive or execution.

The attack follows heightened warnings of terror threats targeting Mogadishu’s airport and foreign diplomatic compounds.

A day earlier, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud survived an assassination attempt after an explosion hit his convoy in Mogadishu.

At least one vehicle was partially destroyed, and four people, including a journalist, were killed in the Al-Shabab-claimed attack.

Since mid-last month, Al-Shabab has intensified attacks in the Middle Shabelle and Hiran regions to regain lost ground.

Driven out of Mogadishu in 2011, the al-Qaeda-linked group continues to carry out deadly attacks.

For over a decade, the militant group has battled to impose a hardline interpretation of Sharia law in Somalia.

Al-Shabab still controls large swaths of southern and central Somalia.
