Ministry of Information and Free Press Unlimited discuss freedom of expression
Mogadishu, 22 August 2017 – H.E. Abdirahman Omar Osman (Eng. Yarisow), Minister of Information, Culture & Toursim of the Federal Government of Somalia today met Mr Jens Kiesheyer, Programes Coordinator for Africa of Free Press Unlimited who visited Mogadishu, Somalia.
Minister Eng. Yarisow briefed Free Press Unlimited the priorities, challenges and the progress of the Ministry of Information with regards to the promotion of the freedom of expression as well as plans to develop Somali media further. Eng. Yarisow stated “It is our priority to promote the freedom of expression and press freedom as enshrined in article 18 of the Somali provisional constitution. I have no doubt that Somalia will become the champion of press freedom in Africa once the country gets peace and stable, as Somali journalists are brave, dedicated, dynamic that want to excel their professionalism on a daily basis. The will of our journalists and the vibrant media outlets will prove to the world that Somalia is a leading nation that promote the press freedom as it is a human right issue and everyone needs it. “
Eng. Yarisow thanked Mr Jens Kiesheyer for visiting Mogadishu for the first time and asked Free Press Unlimited to have offices in Mogadishu and throughout Somalia, in order to provide capacity building opportunities to Somali journalists so that everyone in Somalia will be able to get impartial and reliable information.
Minister Eng. Yarisow concluded his remarks by saying “If the will, the dedication, the commitment and the bravery of Somali journalists is matched with the experts of rebuttable and trusted organizations like Free Press Unlimited, I have every confident that Somalia will become one the best countries in the world that has a vibrant independent, free media that promotes the freedom of expression, which is fundamental to the progress of the society.”
