Mayor of Mogadishu injured in suicide explosion
MOGADISHU, Somalia – A suicide bomb explosion has ripped through the Municipality headquarters of Somali capital Mogadishu, a day after 17 people were killed in the capital.
The explosion went off on Wednesday inside the headquarters as local government officials were holding a security meeting.
Deputy Governor of Banadir Mohamed Tulah confirmed that mayor of Mogadishu Abdirahman Osman was injured in the explosion.
Osman was taken into hospital, he said.
He was seriously injured in the blast.
Mayor Osman met the newly appointed U.N. envoy James Swan in his office earlier today.
The explosion occurred after Mr. Swan left the Mayor’s office. Officials say a security meeting was underway when the explosion occurred.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
The attack comes a day after 17 people were killed in a suicide explosion at the main road to the city’s airport in the capital.
