Massive layoffs following terror attacks in Kenya

Mareeg.com-Over 4,000 hotel workers have been laid off following a drop of international tourists visiting Kenya due to travel advisories following spates of terrorism attacks, sources said.The United Kingdom, the US, France and Australia earlier this month issued travel advisories with Britain evacuating over 500 tourists last week only.

The Kenya Tourism Board said already the travel advisories have dealt a big blow to the economy which has lost 5 billion shillings ($56 million).

Tourism is Kenya’s second foreign exchange earner with the country raking $1.2billion in 2013.

“Some hotels have temporarily shut down owing to the low season, while those remaining open are averaging at 10 per cent occupancy,� Kwale County tourism executive Adam Sheikh was quoted on Wednesday saying by the Daily Nation newspaper.

On March 19 2014 Uhuru sent out his sentiments concerning the evacuation being done by the West Countries stating that Kenya would get other tourists from other countries.

This month only the East African nation has witnessed over 6 terrorist attacks, killing over 12 people and wounding others.
