Somali police have arrested a man accused of raping two young girls, triggering outrage and widespread calls for justice.
The assault occurred around 4:00 a.m. on May 11 in Booray area where the victims were later found assaulted.
Authorities launched an investigation and identified Sharmaake Hussein Yusuf, 31, a Garowe resident, as the primary suspect now in custody.
He was arrested near Garowe’s municipal office during a police operation, reportedly inside a vehicle linked to the crime.
Two additional vehicles believed to have been used during the crime were seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
Sharmaake is detained at Western Police Station in Garowe, as CID officers continue legal procedures and forensic analysis.
The authorities condemned the brutal crime and vowed to deliver justice without clan or political interference in court proceedings.
They also emphasized protecting vulnerable populations, especially girls, and ending impunity for sexual violence across Puntland.
Human rights groups called for tougher laws and community awareness to address increasing violence against girls and women.
Residents welcomed the arrest but demanded long-term reforms to prevent such crimes before they happen.
Formal charges are expected soon as prosecutors seeking the maximum sentence allowed under Puntland’s criminal laws for sexual violence.
