Kenyan soldier killed in attack by Al Shabaab

MOGADISHU – Somali armed group al Shabaab claimed to have carried out an ambush attack on Kenyan police vehicle near border town, leaving a soldier dead.

The attack took place on Wednesday when heavily armed militants launched a surprise assault on Kenyan police soldiers’ vehicle in Gumarey area of Wajir town, in northeast of Kenya.

The group says its fighters had killed a Kenyan soldier and seized 2 AK-47s, a M16 gun and a RPG during the attack.

Wajir, a town which is close to Kenyan border along Somalia.

The attack comes days after the group’s fighters also carried out an attack in Mandera town where a Kenyan soldier left dead.

Al-Shabab is an armed group based in Somalia, fighting to topple the Western-backed Somali government.

The group also wants to impose a strict version of Islamic law in Somalia.

The al Qaeda linked group has carried out several attacks in neighboring countries, including Kenya, since Nairobi launched a military operation inside Somalia in 2011.
