Kenyan police have launched a security operation targeting Somali youths in Nairobi, saying the move is intended to curb a growing trend of young people filming social-media challenge videos on major roads.
Police said the videos, recorded on busy streets in the capital, have contributed to a rise in accidents and other dangerous incidents, including fatalities and injuries among the youths involved.
Kenyan authorities have also filed a formal complaint with the Somali Embassy in Nairobi, urging action to address the trend and reduce risks on public roads.
Somalia’s ambassador to Kenya, Jibril Ibrahim Abdulle, said filming or taking photos on public roads is illegal and urged youths to use hotels or other recreational areas instead.
He also called on the Kenyan government and parents to help stop behaviors that endanger both the youths and the wider public.
Nairobi hosts a large Somali community involved in education and business, making Somalis one of the most visible populations in the city.
