THE United States has dissuaded its citizens from travelling to Kenya because of recent bomb blasts in Nairobi.

It joined Australia, Britain and France in issuing travel advisories to its citizens against travelling to Kenya.

The US Department of State has warned the country’s citizens of the risks of travelling to the East African country saying that US citizens in Kenya, and those considering travelling to the country, should evaluate their personal security situation in light of continuing and recently heightened threats from terrorism and the high rate of violent crime in some areas.

In the travel advisory, the US advised that the levels of risk vary throughout the country.

“Based on the security situation, the Embassy is reviewing its staffing with an eye toward reduction in staff in the near future,” said the US Department of State’s statement.

It further stated that the advisory replaces the travel warning of May 15, a day before the twin bomb blasts in Gikomba.

The travel advisory comes a few days after the US Ambassador to Kenya, Robert Godec, reiterated his country’s commitment to collaborating with Kenya in the fight against terrorism.

Godec said his country strongly condemned the terrorist attacks that occurred last Friday in the Gikomba market in Nairobi.

More than ten people were killed.

“The United States and Kenya have been partners for 50 years, and our resolve to stand with Kenya in combating terrorism is unwavering,” read Godec’s statement.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and hoteliers have since come out to protest the against the UK’s decision to issue travel advisories saying that it affected Kenya’s tourism industry.
