Kenya lifts curfew on Muslim counties for Ramadan

enyan authorities have officially announced the lifting of security curfew in Msulim dominated counties inn North Eastern and coastal region.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has said the curfew imposed on Mandera, Wajir, Lamu, Garissa and Tana River counties has been lifted.

Maj-Gen (rtd) Nkaissery said the curfew would not apply during the Muslim holy month of Ramadhan and that the government would monitor the situation for a review.

On June 19, President Uhuru Kenyatta directed the Cabinet secretary to review the curfew in the five counties to enable Muslims to fulfil their religious obligations without any impediment.

The President also asked interior ministry and Inspector-General of Police to enhance security throughout the country during the period.

The move comes just four days after two soldiers and 16 Al-Shabaab fighters were killed following an attack at the Kenya Defence Forces military camp in Baure, along the coast.

The curfew was imposed in larger Somali dominated North Eastern region on May after Al Shabaab attack on Garissa University college in which more than 150 mainly students were killed.

Al Shabaab carried out wave of attacks inside Kenya for retaliation of its troops inside Somalia.
