United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres appointed James Swan of the United States as his Special Representative for Somalia.
Swan also will serve as head of United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia.
He had been acting in the role since May 2024. Guterres thanked him for agreeing to continue leading the UN’s efforts in Somalia.
Swan is an experienced diplomat with extensive work in Africa, including Somalia, Congo, and Djibouti.
He holds degrees from Georgetown University, Johns Hopkins University, and the National War College, fluent in English and French.
