The U.S. military has killed one ISIS militant in a drone strike carried out on Friday southeast of Bosaso in the Bari region of northeastern Somalia.
U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) said the airstrike was conducted in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia.
AFRICOM said the strike eliminated one ISIS terrorist and that no civilians were harmed.
AFRICOM said ISIS has shown it can target U.S. forces and reaffirmed support for Somalia’s fight against the group.
President Donald Trump said the time for militants to hide has come to an end, saying U.S. drones “will hunt them.”
Trump also reiterated his commitment to defeating terrorism and promoting lasting peace and prosperity in Somalia.
“We stand with the Somali people, who must not allow the Houthis in Yemen to gain a foothold in their region,” he said.
The U.S., he said, is ready to support Somalia in its mission to eliminate terrorism and build a secure and prosperous future.
