MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has welcomed the recent decision by Belgium government to have recognized diplomatic and service passports issued by government of Somalia.

IGAD Executive Secretary Ambassador Mahboub Maalim says the move would significantly boost bilateral relations between Somalia and Belgium.

Mahboub Maalim says the decision would also facilitate Somalia government officials to engage with European Union institutions based in Brussels.

Maalim added that it was a positive step and is a demonstration of a growing confidence by the international community in Somalia and its institutions.

He stressed Belgium would extend the recognition to the ordinary passport of Somalia.

However, IGAD encourages other remaining countries to recognise passport issued by the Federal Government of Somalia and facilitate favorable visa processing for Somali nationals.
