Four killed in Somalia fighting
MOGADISHU, Somalia – At least four people have been confirmed dead in fierce fighting broke out between Somali army forces and Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab in north of Somali capital Mogadishu.
The fighting erupted when Al Shabaab militants launched an ambush attack on military forces near Bal’ad town, some 31km north of Mogadishu.
A Somali military official, Qasim Ahmed said its forces had killed at least 4 militants belonging to Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab during the clash near Bal’ad town in Middle Shabelle region.
“We were traveling along the road between Jowhar and Bal’ad when the terrorists attacked us. We killed 4 of them”, he said.
There was no immediate comment from Al Shabaab over the claims.
The Al Qaeda linked group has been fighting for more than ten years in Somalia.
The geoup, which once controlled much of the capital of Mogadishu in 2011, wants to topple the weak-western backed government of Somalia.
