MOGADISHU, Somalia —At least four African Union soldiers from Uganda were killed and five others wounded in an ambush attack in Lower Shabelle region.
The attack, carried out by Al Shabab militants, took place near Afgoye town, about 30km south west of the capital, Mogadishu.
During the ambush, military equipment was damaged, according to Somalimemo, pro-al Shabab mouthpiece.
Meanwhile, in the Bay region, fierce fighting erupted after Al-Shabab fighters attacked an army base manned by Ethiopian military forces.
The battle lasted for several hours as both sides used heavy weaponry. Al Shabab claimed to have destroyed several military vehicles.
Ethiopian forces shelled several areas shortly after repulsing the militants’ attack.
The casualty remains unclear. Ethiopian troops, along with Somali military forces, launched an operation following the raid.
Driven out of Mogadishu in 2011, the group still carries out deadly attacks and holds large swaths in south and central Somalia.
