Fresh clashes erupted Friday in Beled-Hawo, Gedo, as federal troops and Jubbaland forces resumed hostilities after days of rising tensions.
The fighting took place near the UK camp where federal troops led by NISA’s Gedo chief, Abdirashid Janan, have been stationed since Tuesday.
Heavy weaponry could be heard across the town, a witness said. The damage and potential casualties from both sides remain unclear.
The clash follows recent troop deployments by Jubbaland and the federal government, each citing security concerns as justification for their movements.
Janan said his troops came under attack and responded in self-defense. He also vowed not to tolerate any assault on Beled-Hawo.
“We will defend our ground at any cost. President Ahmed Madobe can’t stop me,” says Janan, claiming he helped free Gedo from Al Shabab.
On Tuesday, at least 10 people were killed in similar fighting, sparking fears of further escalation without swift political intervention.
