EU Military Committee strengthens EU partnership with the Somali Federal Government Patrick de Rousiers, Chair of the EU Military Committee, together with the EU Military Representatives of Ireland, The Netherlands and Sweden met President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud, Prime Minister Abdiweli and the Somali National Security Council in Mogadishu to review the progress of the EU Training Mission of the Somali National Armed Forces (EUTM), to take stock of the progress made by the current SNAF/AMISOM operations, and to discuss broader EU cooperation in support of the Somali security forces.

Somalia is currently at a crucial moment and its international partners are stepping up their engagement. The EU, and its Member States, continue to be key security partners for Somalia. The EU remains the main donor to AMISOM, and missions such as the EUTM as well as bilateral support from Member States are crucial in helping to rebuild the Somali security sector. The EU has adopted a comprehensive approach across the security sector in Somalia and is engaged in a range of areas and activities: support to Somali National Army, AMISOM, Somali police, maritime security and stabilisation efforts.

General de Rousiers underscored the “EU commitment to enhance capacities of the Somali National Armed Forces and maritime security structures”. President Hassan Sheikh “appreciated the continued EU support to AMISOM and welcomed the full deployment of the EU Training Mission in Mogadishu”. (END)
