Ethiopian Spy Chief Arrives in Mogadishu

Read Time:43 Second

Ethiopia’s intelligence chief Redwan Hussein visited Mogadishu unannounced Tuesday, delivering a message from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Somali President Hassan Mohamud.

Redwan met President Mohamud shortly after arrival. The message’s contents were undisclosed, and neither government issued statements on the meeting’s outcome.

During the visit, Redwan also met Mahad Salad, Somalia’s intelligence director, at NISA headquarters. Details of their discussions were not publicly shared.

The surprise visit follows last week’s Djibouti meeting between Abiy and President Ismail Omar Guelleh amid rising diplomatic tensions in the Horn of Africa region.

It also coincides with reports Israel recognized Somaliland, Somalia’s claimed territory. Mogadishu condemned the move, and several international partners criticized the reported recognition.

No official readout has been released. Ethiopia’s intelligence chief presence signals potential efforts to reopen dialogue between Addis Ababa and Mogadishu on sensitive matters.
