Ethiopia has shifted its maritime access push from gaining recognition to implementing practical steps, Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos said.
Speaking during the 6th regular session of the House of Peoples’ Representatives, Gedion emphasized sea access as a “cross-generational national question,” transcending any single government.
He noted Ethiopians at home and abroad, alongside embassies, are actively engaged in advancing maritime access, showing progress through diplomatic channels and public advocacy.
Gedion praised citizens advocating for Ethiopia’s sea access on media platforms without direct government support, calling their engagement “essential to safeguarding national interests and sovereignty.”
Last year, Ethiopia signed a sea access deal with Somaliland, a breakaway region, in return for recognition, sparking tensions with neighboring Somalia.
After nearly eleven months, Ethiopia and Somalia resolved their dispute following a meeting in Ankara, mediated by Turkey’s president, bringing diplomatic relations back on track.
It remains unclear if Ethiopia will pursue maritime access through Somalia, but Gedion reaffirmed securing Assab Port remains a strategic national priority for the country.
