Somalia is planning to provide military bases to Egypt for training Somali National Army (SNA) soldiers in battling Al Shabab, an al-Qaeda-linked group.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ali Bal’ad, said Somalia and Egypt have agreed to strengthen military support as part of their ongoing agreement.
Minister Bal’ad said Egypt will establish military camps in Somalia, where its trainers will provide training to SNA forces.
The goal of this plan, he stated, is to enhance the overall security of Somalia.
“Egypt is committed to supporting SNA soldiers. Training will directly contribute to the SNA’s battle against Al Shabab,” he said.
Egypt has always supported Somalia and previously trained Somali officers, providing them with high-level experience and expertise in the field.
This comes after both countries signed key security agreements between Cairo and Mogadishu, focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation.
Egypt has also joined the African Union’s AUSSOM mission, which began in Somalia this year, sending forces by air and sea.
President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s government previously provided Somalia with arms and supplies to strengthen the Somali National Army.
